We did our usual warm up, then a 5 minute round of flow rolling. I paired up with Dumi, and had a nice round of moving and grooving. He moves so smoothly.
We reviewed the two DLR pass options we did last week. I rotated and drilled with Dumi and Cheng. I started off doing Step A of the pass, then Step B, then Step C, focusing on getting each part of it right. Then, A, B, C, a bit faster. And by the end of the round, ABC, as one continuous movement. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
We finished class with two 9 minute rounds. I had Cheng and then Evan.
I’ve been thinking a lot about Cheng and his berimbolo, strategy, and what I can do to be better against him. And it paid off last night. He goes hard, and so I met his intensity. I had two specific goals with him: counter the berimbolo, and if I go to turtle, immediately roll out. He started out with a berimbolo, which I successfully avoided him taking my back. I didn’t end up on top, but I had a guard going. Later, he was trying it again and I attacked with a footlock, but narrowly missed it. He tried both a paper cutter choke, then a wrist lock from side control, but I avoided both of those too. Got to turtle, immediately rolled. Didn’t land on top, but didn’t get my back taken either. It was a good hard round. I’m going to have to start mixing in other options from turtle, the roll is good, but I do it too often.
Evan was less intense, but still good. We were both pretty squirmy, and ended up in some unusual position and scrambles.
